House Blessing Preparation Information

A few things to note...
Pay attention to any dreams, life experiences, patterns, emotions and/or symbols that may be showing up in higher relief for you over the few days leading up to your session.  The ceremony begins once it is scheduled, for many there can be a shift in perspective... either things seem to get a little more "interesting" or the original issue or concerns that prompted the work seem to lessen or "disappear."  This is normal and there's no right or wrong way to feel, the process is different for everyone... it's even okay if you don't feel or notice anything at all!  Here are some supportive suggestions:
  • Journal about any dreams or memories that come up.

  • Pay attention to yourself, your needs and positive self-care.

  • Begin to take note of how you want to be in your space?  What kind of space do you need in order to thrive?  What symbols, objects, images represent this?

Have a light meal before the ceremony and be sure to hydrate as well, plan on being hungry afterwards... it's big work; we will be breaking bread following the blessing!  You may also want to ask friends or family members to attend the blessing as an ally for you.  They can also help track you on the day of your ceremony, so don't feel shy about asking their help in getting you and your home prepared!  You can always contact me if you have questions or are in need of additional support.

There will be a few things you will need to gather for the ceremony.
  • Red Cedar – just a small limb or two, enough to place a small sprig above every window, door and mirror after the ceremony

  • Corn Meal – enough to make a thin line around your property after the ceremony

  • Bowls – after the ceremony we will create a constellation of candles throughout the home to represent the light and healing that has occurred during the work.  We will need enough “bowls” to set one in each room of the house.

  • Community Meal – following the blessing we will “break bread” to complete the work.  The meal you provide can be anything that you would like to offer us as nourishment!!

Some thoughts on allies:

You’ll want to invite people who hold a loving energy and presence to your home to support the blessing.  These will be your support allies.  You can invite as many as you want so long as you are comfortable and they hold your highest intention in a good way.  The job of the allies is to keep you company and focused on your positive intentions during the ceremony.  Everyone will need to have an open schedule for the day and be willing to stay present (not leave the altar or ceremony) until we are complete.

Allies can also be folks who can help you prepare for the ceremony.  There are a few things that you will prepare for this work; your allies can help you with these things.  If you cannot find an ally, let me know and I will help you to find one.

About the ceremony itself:

The ceremony can take 4 hours or more depending upon the work.  It’s difficult to place an end time on the work, so it's important that everyone involved remain present.  We'll go over the specifics as part of the intake.

In short there will be an intake process, a brief break, the work itself followed by a brief break and then an out-take during the breaking of bread.  Following the ceremony you will have an opportunity to offer your giveaways and talk with me about after-care work.

Breaking Bread:

Breaking bread or sharing a meal, is one of the oldest way of bringing joy, love & community into your home.  We break bread at the end of the house blessing in order to celebrate your home and friends!  The meal can be anything that you would like to prepare for your allies, drummer and the practitioners.  Your allies can help you to prepare the meal if you would like.  The meal will be served following the work during the out-take and doesn’t need to be anything other then from the heart.

A note on Giveaways:

The give away is an old custom in ceremonial healing.  We offer gifts that are equal to the healing we wish to receive and are seen as a loving exchange of energy.  The gift of the ceremony is your gift to yourself, though I often encourage people to gift themselves something extra (spa day, trip to the woods, a date night with themselves… etc.)

The other gifts will be things that have heart and meaning to you, things that you were called to offer or things that you think another would enjoy.  Gifts are wrapped in red (the color of power, healing and love) and are given to the drummer & your allies.

It’s suggested that you offer the drummer a small financial gift for their gas or food costs for that day.  The financial exchange for the work would be your gift to me, yet if you are called you can offer a small gift in addition.

Gifts do not have to be fancy, store bought, expensive, complicated, big, small, cheap, ugly, lovely or anything other then from the heart.  Trust yourself, whatever it is… especially socks… is the perfect gift!

The process of house blessing is really a ceremony of homecoming.  We return for love, this ceremony is truly an act of love and I’m so very grateful to be a part of it and share this blessing with you!  Congratulations for the courage it takes to show up for yourself in this way.

If you have any questions then please contact me, otherwise I’ll see you at your appointment!
